Musket Remnant, Herzog Painting Lead Doyle’s Americana Auction

"Doyle New York's auction of American furniture and decorative arts, including paintings and prints, on November 17 showcased important American furniture and decorative arts from the colonial period through the Federal and classical styles.
. . .
Highlighting the sale was a painting by Hermann Ottomar Herzog (American, 1832–1932) depicting a sunset in the Florida Everglades that doubled its estimate of $25/35,000 to fetch $74,500."  [Read Full Article]

David Hockney and Damien Hirst go head to head with solo London shows

"A small note on the posters for David Hockney's forthcoming exhibition at the Royal Academy contains a sly dig at another superstar artist about to launch a major exhibition. The note reads: 'All the works here were made by the artist himself, personally.'

In an interview with the Radio Times, Hockney confirmed that he had in mind Damien Hirst, whose £50m diamond and platinum skull will be the centrepiece of a Tate Modern exhibition in April, the first solo show of his work in a UK museum."  [Read Full Article]

Big Beat: Why is some art a better investment than stocks?

"It’s a slippery thing to compare the art of specific artists to the stock market as a whole, as one measure is individual and the other is aggregation. Ottawa collector Glenn McInnes notes, 'I suspect there are some individual stocks such as Microsoft and Google that have performed equally for the original purchasers to those of the Hirsts and Warhols, and I suspect very strongly that all stocks have outperformed all art produced in the last century.'

True enough, but it’s also true that by times investors (or perhaps just extraordinarily lucky art lovers) have earned far greater returns by buying art than a stock-market index would have gained in that same period."  [Read Full Article]

This is not a tax, says Boston’s mayor

"The Museum of Fine Arts was dismayed to learn that the city of Boston is requesting a payment of $250,000 this year under new rules for the amount that not-for-profit organisations have to pay in lieu of taxes. The city plans to quadruple the bill to more than $1m by 2016.

The steep rise in contributions is a result of the Mayor of Boston Thomas Menino’s revised Payment in Lieu of Taxes scheme, known as Pilot. The art museums, and the city’s other not-for-profit organisations owning property that is worth more than $15m, face paying a fee that is based on 25% of what they would have to pay if they were charged the city’s commercial tax."  [Read Full Article]

Arab protesters put their art on the streets

"'What is interesting to see in Egypt, and in all these countries, is that artists are not only going out into the city, they also become agents of change in society,' says Hans Ulrich Obrist of London’s Serpentine Gallery, who is chairing a discussion on art patronage in the Middle East as part of a summit at the British Museum and the Royal College of Art (12-13 January). 'If you think about it in terms of the Russian Revolution and Mayakovsky saying ‘the streets are our brushes, the squares our palettes’, it’s about art going beyond the museum and blurring the boundaries between art and life.'"  [Read Full Article]

UK Droit de Suite Comes Into Law

"In case you took your eye off the ball, while everyone was popping their Champagne or Prosecco corks at midnight 2012, the EU Droit de Suite Artist's Resale rights came into effect, here in Britain. This is perhaps the most detrimental law, ever to be passed, since the UK was art market leader, back in the 1960's -1970's. At the beginning of 2011, the UK was the number two secondary market for Modern and Contemporary art, after the United States. It has since slipped into third place after China. British dealers and auction houses will now lose works of art to rival markets in New York, Geneva, Moscow and Hong Kong or wherever the European sales levy, known as Droit de suite is not implemented."  [Read Full Article]
