David Lynch adds art to maths

"Mathematics – A Beautiful Elsewhere was dreamt up by Fondation Cartier’s pioneering director, Hervé Chandès. It is almost certainly Paris’s first ever exhibition to explore the aesthetic potential of what he calls the 'abstract art par excellence' and what the rest of us know simply as maths. 'The art world is all ego, ego, ego,' says Chandès. 'With mathematicians it’s not like that.'
. . .
Within months, he had furnished Chandès with a dossier containing what he and his colleagues considered some of the most artistically rich ideas in contemporary mathematics. All that was then needed was an artist with the imaginative dexterity to transform the ideas in that dossier into an engaging series of interactive exhibits. Chandès recruited his old friend, film-maker, artist and former Fondation Cartier exhibitor David Lynch."  [Read Full Article]

Picasso takes lead in big New York art sales

"Christie's and Sotheby's hold their big autumn art sales in New York starting next week, with both houses looking to Pablo Picasso to excite a robust market.
The prominence of important works by Picasso, Matisse and other modern masters in the impressionist and modern art sales at Christie's on Tuesday and Sotheby's on Wednesday reflects the healthy appetite this year for big-ticket works, auctioneers said."  [Read Full Article]

From New York, con amor: Former border residents raise money for Juárez

"Connected through networking, Urias and 14 other professionals with diverse backgrounds - including fashion, art, media and law - started meeting more than a year ago as Project Paz to organize a fundraiser that would benefit Juárez.

With the help from the local initiative Amor Por Juárez, the New York friends organized and had their first fundraising event, Project Art, last November. Artists in and around New York were invited to donate works that were auctioned as part of a cocktail party and fashion event at Industria Superstudio in New York City's meatpacking district.

The event raised more than $90,000, and most of it was donated to FECHAC (Fundacion del Empresariado Chihuahuense)."  [Read Full Article]

Unknown Velazquez spotted by auction house

"The painting was originally consigned for sale to Bonhams' Oxford office in August last year, one of a number of works understood to be by Shepperson, a jobbing artist at Buckingham Palace. Someone noticed that this particular portrait had star quality and it was hastily withdrawn for further research.

Suspecting that it just might be the work of the 17th century genius Velázquez, Bonhams called on the help of Peter Cherry, professor of art history at the University of Dublin and one of the world's leading authorities on the artist."  [Read Full Article]

Australian curator resigns over stalled indigenous gallery

"One of Australia’s most influential indigenous art curators, Hetti Perkins, has resigned in 'frustration' from the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) and will now strive to fulfil her vision for a national indigenous cultural centre in Sydney.

Perkins’ resignation letter, addressed to AGNSW director Edmund Capon, who retires at the end of 2011, expressed dismay that her exhibition proposals 'are not progressed beyond successive presentations', and that the AGNSW’s Yiribana gallery for indigenous art had stagnated."  [Read Full Article]

Artists' royalty suit may hinge on constitutional issue

"An artists’ royalty provision, known as droit de suite, has long prevailed in some European countries — and in 2006 it took effect throughout the European Union, including Ireland and Great Britain, which previously didn’t allow visual artists’ resale royalties.  In the United States, Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Beverly Hills) tried and failed in 1978 to pass a national bill modeled on the California statute; according to Reddy in the LMU legal journal, several bills introduced in Congress during the late 1980s also failed.

But Congress asked the U.S. Copyright Office to report on the issue, and in 1992 it delivered a 400-page assessment, which advised against giving visual artists a resale royalty right."  [Read Full Article]

"While the main, arched hall of the museum with its ornate, massive clock has not been touched, now nearly all the building’s other smaller gallery spaces are more intimate, and give the sense of being in an entirely different museum, one that also feels more accessible. Modernizing the Academy

"Newer and bigger aren't always better. Maintaining historical continuity is as important as updating one's image and establishing a fresh start. To understand just how far astray an institution can go in the name of modernization and expansion, one need only consider the recent botched redesigns of New York's Morgan Library & Museum and Brooklyn Museum.

These difficulties are compounded when the institution is as unique and multifaceted as the member-run National Academy Museum & School, which reopened in September at the heart of Manhattan's museum mile after a 15-month, $3.5 million renovation."  [Read Full Article]

The Surfing Madonna Complex: A Political Awakening in Encinitas

"She appeared on Good Friday beneath a railway bridge in the California beach town of Encinitas: the Virgin of Guadalupe calmly surfing a cobalt blue wave, her cloak pointing toward the words 'SAVE THE OCEAN.' 'The train bridge created the perfect frame for a work of art,' says Mark Patterson, who left his software career to create the 10-foot-square 'Surfing Madonna' mosaic, planning each detail down to the black booties on the Virgin’s feet.
. . .
Encinitas Councilman Jerome Stocks claimed Catholics were offended by a surfing Virgin Mary. Patterson disagrees: 'The local padre at the Catholic church in town loved it.' The city also suggested the artwork might violate the First Amendment clause that prohibits state-established religion. But in the words of Patterson’s lawyer Anton Gerschler, 'Nobody can look at that piece and seriously say for a minute that the government is asking people to become Catholics or surfing Catholics or worshippers of Madonnas on surfboards.'"  [Read Full Article]

'Lost' Da Vinci Portrait, and its origins, stir controversy

"Christie's auction house may have sold a priceless piece of art by Leonardo da Vinci for a little more than $21,000, according to researchers who claim to have identified the origins of the hotly debated painting.

The painting appears to have come from a 500-year-old book containing the family history of the Duke of Milan. Art historian Martin Kemp, of the University of Oxford, believes the mystery painting, which appeared in 1998, is a portrait of the duke's daughter, created by da Vinci for her wedding book."  [Read Full Article]

Paris art theft suspect says he threw paintings in garbage bin

"Picasso, Braque, Modigliani, Matisse and Leger paintings stolen in May 2010, and worth about $134 million, may have been dumped in a garbage bin on a Paris street and destroyed with the rest of that day's trash, according to testimony by one of three suspects connected to the theft. The suspect, a 34-year-old watch repairman, was identified only as Jonathan B. by the French weekly Le Journal du Dimanche. The paper broke the detailed story on the investigation Sunday."  [Read Full Article]

Sale of the Week: Bonhams's Inaugural Contemporary Art Auction in London

"In conjunction with the Frieze Art Fair, Bonhams will host its first contemporary art sale. And in an attempt to differentiate itself from its larger competitors, Bonhams is approaching the auction in a novel way — the newly created department will present a curated group of only 20 lots that, together, make up a coherent collection. Among the notable works being offered is Alighiero Boetti's "1984" (est. £1.2-1.8 million, or $1.9-2.9 million), a 12-panel work featuring 192 pencil drawings of magazine covers from 1984 that the artist's assistants in Rome indiscriminately plucked from newsstands each month."  [Read Full Article]

Jay Jopling: Big space, big art, big ego

"Jay Jopling, 48, is the founder of London's White Cube gallery empire, which has launched its third outpost in the capital to coincide with the Frieze art fair. It will see thousands of the world's wealthiest collectors flock to London over the next three days. Last night Jopling hosted hundreds of VIPs at the Bermondsey gallery's lavish official opening party – with many luminaries attending a small gathering at his Marylebone home afterwards. This week, London auction houses will sell 25 works by Jopling's most famous artist, Damien Hirst, emphasising the gallerist's standing as one of a small group of elite overlords in London's aggressive commercial art world."  [Read Full Article]

Museum Welcomes Dispute Over Work

"For many museums, the prospect of a United States attorney swooping in to seize a painting on loan from a foreign institution on suspicions that it had been looted by the Nazis would be a potential public relations and diplomatic nightmare.

For the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science in Tallahassee, Fla., it has been a fund-raising opportunity."  [Read Full Article]

Druick brings a new era for Art Institute

"We're still in a process of making sure that we can get to the balanced budget. But we're making great progress. I think being enormously careful is inductive to certain types of creativity. In other words, we have budgets within which we have to work; we have to be mindful of our responsibilities fiscally, but at the same time we have to balance those with our responsibilities and missions as an institution, which has great collections, great programs, and increasingly wanting to share what we do with broader audiences which are enabled through new technology."  [Read Full Article]

Still's Stalwart

"As the first director of the Clyfford Still Museum, set to open in Denver on Nov. 18, Mr. Sobel will be reintroducing a first-generation Abstract Expressionist who abruptly severed his ties to the commercial art world in 1951 and rarely showed or sold his works after that. A few museums own some of his works—massive canvases of ragged swaths of black and a primary color that resemble rawhide—but his last large exhibition was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1979-80. Nearly 95% of Still's output has been locked away for decades."  [Read Full Article]

Global art market rebounds from financial crisis

"Artwork is an alternative to other investment assets, such as stocks, bonds and property. And currently it is regarded as a safer option, some art experts said. Besides gold, it is the only commodity that gives steady returns and can gain value over time.

Fine art funds -- a rather recent development -- are drawing more interest from investors who seek to diversify portfolios. They find that art can be an attractive option because, like real estate, it is a real and tangible asset."  [Read Full Article]

The bold standard

"According to artnet, an online firm that tracks the art market, $76.9m worth of Mr Richter’s work was sold at auction in 2010. This was substantially more than any other living artist, including Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst or the Chinese favourite, Zeng Fanzhi. The market for Richter paintings is deep and widespread. Jasper Johns sells chiefly to ageing Americans and only his early works fetch exorbitant prices. By contrast, many periods of Mr Richter’s painting enjoy strong global demand."  [Read Full Article]

Pacific Standard Time: Open your eyes to John McLaughlin

"A typical McLaughlin canvas chucks established notions of good composition. Most of his paintings are divided right down the middle, forming roughly equal halves. The right-left division is sometimes made by juxtaposing pairs or groups of rectangles. Other times, one or more vertical bars cut the picture in two. Occasionally, the bars are wide horizontals — so wide that your eyes can't take in both ends at once."  [Read Full Article]

Marathon Art Sale Raises Record $94.8 Million, Triple Estimate

"Sotheby’s biggest Chinese fine-painting sale ended last night after almost 12 hours and 364 lots. Its total of HK$738.3 million ($94.8 million) including fees was the highest for the New York-based auction house in that art category. The presale estimate was HK$200 million at hammer prices.

Wealthy Chinese are keen to buy works by the nation’s top artists. Bidding was brisk for 36 pieces by 20th-century master Zhang Daqian. Other highly sought lots by Lin Fengmian and Qi Baishi sold at several times estimates. A second sale raised $HK2.1 million for the University of Oxford’s China Center."  [Read Full Article]

Late Revelations

"Unlike most of his colleagues, de Kooning never jettisoned the world at large from his work. It’s just not easy to recognize his references. Anyone who saw his survey show at Guild Hall in Easthampton in 1981 had the opportunity to see a sculpture of a clam digger installed in front of a colorful canvas animated by abstract squiggles, scrawls and swooshes. However, with the bronze cast as a guide, it was obvious that the oil painting’s thick, wide brushstrokes formed the contours of a figure in motion. "  [Read Full Article]
