Where have all the children gone, Britain's galleries wonder

"The National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) lost thousands of visitors aged 16 or under between 2010 and 2011, according to the institutions' most recent annual performance data, submitted to the Government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). How to borrow $10 million

"A crew of experts was on hand to advise on the value of the pieces. The bidding gathered pace. Staff took fake phone calls and bid on behalf of "mystery buyers." A young woman shouted encouragement in Arabic. One team bid hard, driving prices far higher than the recommended valuations. At the last minute they pulled out, landing rivals with an exorbitant bill. A large plasma screen showed the real-life bidding going on downstairs. George Stubbs' "Gimcrack on Newmarket Heath" sold for 22.4 million pounds ($35 million), making it the third most valuable Old Master ever sold at auction."  [Read Full Article]

It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's… A Hero of the Bulgarian Revolution?

"The [Bulgarian] government opened a museum Sept. 19 to showcase some of the more shameful sides of Bulgaria's communist past through wacky art and kitsch sculptures. Bulgaria is the latest ex-Soviet bloc country to open such a collection, and its Museum of Socialist Art is also the biggest, the government says.

'We want to close this period. We're trying to kill the bogeyman and put it in the museum,' said Finance Minister Simeon Djankov, as he took a reporter on a tour of the place. 'A lot of people here have a romanticized view of communist times and we need to show the unvarnished truth.'"  [Read Full Article]

Art gallery directors play a larger role than meets the eye

"The role of gallery director is an increasingly significant one in Chicago, where the expansion of districts from River North and Michigan Avenue into the West Loop, Pilsen and beyond are evidence that more contemporary art galleries are shining than shuttering. And they don't run themselves.

The owner is the recognizable face of the gallery. But almost like The Great and Powerful Oz, the director is working the magic behind the curtain. Like a silent partner, the director is often just as responsible for logistics and management as the owner, or more. Only the director's name isn't on the door."  [Read Full Article]

White Cube art empire chalks up a record for gallery space

"White Cube Bermondsey – a stone's throw from Tate Modern and Renzo Piano's Shard building – will be Jopling's third outpost in London, adding a branch south of the river to galleries in the West End and Hackney. A fourth, in Hong Kong, is planned for early next year. What began in 1993 as one of the smallest galleries in London now employs more than 100 people.

The new gallery, converted from a 1970s warehouse once used as a distribution centre for the Radio Times, contains an array of new spaces for showing White Cube's roster of artists, who range from Damien Hirst and Gilbert and George to Anselm Kiefer and Doris Salcedo."  [Read Full Article]

Lydia Fenet at Christie’s says there was a huge increase in charity auctions in the boom years between 2000 and 2008. Then, hedge fund money made for more visible events, such as the star-studded Robin Hood Foundation Gala, but these suffered during the downturn. Museum Admission as an Expression of Mission

"Museums’ pricing structures aren’t a question of universal morality. They’re a question of mission. Mission first. In the case of MoMA, organizational priorities include maintaining a peerless collection, producing the impressive, expensive exhibitions, and retaining its position as an international tourist destination. In support of this mission, a $25 admission price makes sense. Besides, the museum isn’t asking regulars to pay this price. With a $75 individual membership, if you visit every other month, that’s only $12.50 a visit. Accessibility regardless of ability to pay remains a priority, if a secondary one, for MoMA, and this manifests through free Friday nights. Every museum must make pricing decisions that reflect its particular mission."  [Read Full Article]

One masterpiece can go a long way

"New York’s Frick Collection, combining the trend for single-work shows with another recent phenomenon, the collection-based exhibition (The Art Newspaper, March), displayed its re-cleaned St Francis in the Desert, around 1475-78, by Giovanni Bellini, under the title “In a New Light” this summer.
Creative use of smaller budgets for exhibitions is one driving force behind this trend. The directors we spoke to said that loan fees, design, insurance and transport costs for a single work are minuscule compared to a big thematic or an in-depth show for a single artist."  [Read Full Article]

Papa’s Damn Good Pictures

"ERNEST HEMINGWAY the hunter, Hemingway the fisherman, Hemingway the drinker — they’re all part of the legend. Among the motifs in “The Select,” the Elevator Repair Service staging of “The Sun Also Rises,” currently at the New York Theater Workshop, is an inside joke about how much imbibing takes place in that book.

But Hemingway the art lover?"  [Read Full Article]

Warhhol prints in demand at latest modern prints auction

'In the Bottom of my garden', a miniature lithograph from 1956 led the pricing at $7,600. That was nearly three times the minimum bid set, another indication of strong demand. 'Flowers', a 1970 screenprint, sold for $3,700, close to the original estimate."  [Read Full Article]

Singapore: An Art Hub?

"A bigger question is whether the growth of Singapore’s art market is sustainable. Despite the large audience drawn by Art Stage, ArtSingapore, Singapore’s longest-running contemporary art fair, will go on hiatus this year. Shen Po Chen, its director, said in a statement that this was to allow the fair to “re-assess the market situation.” Similarly, some contend that the audience figures for the Singapore Biennale were inflated. The organizers included visitors to the Biennale’s public exhibits, many of which are located in heavily trafficked areas in the city centre, in their numbers."  [Read Full Article]

Memory in the Making

"For nine years, a foundation and a pair of Milanese architects have been working to transform the grim, cavernous depot —all but abandoned after the war — into the Memorial of the Shoah.

When finished, the project will take up 75,000 square feet and will include a Jewish-themed library rising three stories within the vast space, as well as an auditorium, a room for silent contemplation and a cluster of open-sided cubes for showing video testimonials by European Holocaust survivors."  [Read Full Article]

The Bias Against Tradition

"Preservation of historically or aesthetically significant edifices is an ancient practice that once provoked little controversy. But as preservation's scope has widened from individual buildings to encompass districts from Colonial Annapolis, Md., to Old Pasadena, Calif., it has become yet another cultural battleground. Much of the debate involves modernist architecture's role in landmark settings of a traditional character. Preservation professionals often advocate modernist additions to these settings, while at the grass-roots level there is strong support for keeping the new work traditional."  [Read Full Article]

SHAPING THE VOID

"This month, a small portion of Ground Zero will open to the public, to mark the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Because so much of the site is unfinished, the main thing on view will be the memorial to the victims of the attacks, built on and around the footprint of the two World Trade Center towers. This is chiefly the design of Michael Arad, a young architect whose entry was chosen, in 2004, from among fifty-two hundred entries, the largest such contest in history. Early on, public officials made the sensible decision that, whatever happened at the site, nothing new would rise exactly where the Twin Towers had stood."  [Read Full Article]

Dance to the music of time

"The RA’s exhibition ‘Degas and the Ballet: Picturing Movement’ sets out to present Degas in a new light. It explores his fascination with movement, expressed through the dance, in the broader context of the technical experiments of his day, particularly photography and early film. Photography, which had emerged around 1839, had, by the 1870s, become all the rage. Photographs proliferated in Degas’ world. Calling cards bearing little photographs, called cartes de visite, were immensely popular. Anyone with the slightest social pretensions had to have one, and for the stars of the world of entertainment, ballet and opera, they were an effective publicity tool. Celebrities’ cartes de visite were eagerly collected and pasted into albums."  [Read Full Article]
